β¦ Synopsis
I
Diabetic retinopathy constitutes a well visible part of a more or less generalized diabetic micro-angiopathy which has been defined as a late syndrome of diabetes.
Although diabetic retinopathy has been recognized as such by ophthalmogists for nearly 120 years (v. Jaeger, 1855) we know as little about its cause and development as physicians and diabetologists know about the cause of diabetic micro-angiopathy, especially of the diabetic glomerulosclerosis, that is practically nothing.
Consequently, a number of theories have been evolved (Fischer, Wahl).
