## Abstract Benoit's theory of the time dependence of the birefringence transient in the Kerr cell following sudden removal of the orienting field has been examined and shown to hold only for spherical part ides and not ellipsoids of revolution. This observation is in agreement with the methods of

This is contrary to previously published theories2+ which show that the birefringence relaxation curves for such systems should depend on only the rotary diffusion coefficient for rotation about, the transverse axes. For clarity, pertinent equations in the reference papers quoted here are displayed in the Appendix. We have fonnd that WK's equations ( 12) and ( 14) are in error. The insertion of an artificial $ dependence in equation ( 14) appears to be the primary cause of their erroneous conclusion.
The equation basic to WK's argument (WK( 12)) is not, as they stat.ed, equal to tshat derived by Perrin.6 The eqnation Perrin derived for spheroids is as follows (Perrin's equation (38), P(38)
