✦ Synopsis
Zirin (1972) contends that it is possible to deduce the chromospheric vector magnetic field from Ha filtergrams, and presents a number of'rules for deduction of the magnetic field'. I disagree with his general conclusion, and with several of his specific conclusions, or 'rules'. I have a paper in press at the present time (Frazier, 1972), which discusses both the general conclusion and the specific conclusions in some detail. Since this paper probably will have already appeared by the time this note is published, I will not repeat the specific arguments and evidence here. Instead, I feel that it is advisable to point out in this note several logical fallacies that Zirin commits in the process of arriving at his conslusions.

It has recently been suggested that the large scale structure of the interplanetary magnetic field can be deduced solely from solar wind speed measurements. Here it is emphasized that, in addition to speed measurements, direct measurements of the interplanetary field and indirect diagnostics such as
From investigating spectrograms of penumbrae of some sunspots it is concluded that the maximum magnetic field strength occurs in dark filaments and amounts to 1800-1900 G; the intensity of the magnetic field in dark filaments is 100-400 G larger than in the neighbouring bright filaments; the bright
