✦ Synopsis
It should be interesting to compare the Shah and Kobayashi estimate of K~ for a semielliptical surface crack in a finite thickness plate with the Kz for an edge crack in a finite plate, which corresponds to the surface crack KI for b/a -, O. The Shah and Kobayashi estimate of K l (Fig. 9 of their paper) is repeated below along with the Gross, Srawley, and Brown results l) for a straight edge crack in a finite plate specimen loaded in tension. The Gross et al. results are plotted as the same parameter, Kl/[a~/~b---/E(K)], with the value of the elliptical integral E(K) taken as unity, the appropriate value for b/a = O.
