✦ Synopsis
Speech signals show various types of non-stationary phenomena, one of these is the time varying behavior of formant frequencies. Spectrogram representations are widely used tools which are used to visualize speech signals. In this paper it is shown that the formant tracks of rapidly time varying speech are displayed correctly by spectrograms. Furthermore, if the model of the time variant formant is based on the notion of instantaneous frequency, the discrepancies in the interpretation of the spectrograms in a paper published by (H. F. Silverman & Y. T. Lee [1987]. Computer Speech and Language, 2, 63-86) disappear.
