This paper deals, though, with discrete systems and the Lyapunov equation of the type shown in'its title, while our paper (4) concerns continuous systems. Such systems are mentioned in (3) in a brief remark only, quoting the results from (2) and ( ). However, paper (2) indeed contains the application of the skew-symmetric matrix to the Lyapunov equation for the purpose of reducing the number of algebraic equations. This application has been derived in (4) in a more concise and straightforward manner, but credit for the novelty of the idea has to go to Barnett and Storey (2).

A new method of explicit direct solution for the Lyapunov matrix equation is proposed. Based on a fundamental property allowing the decomposition of any arbitrary matrix into symmetric and skew-symmetric parts, the Lyapunov matrix is expressed in a simple and compact form. In addition, a sign$cant r
It is pointed out that the main results in a recent paper by Kano (1987) have previously been published in the literature. IN KANO (1987), necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence and uniqueness of positive definite solutions to the algebraic Riccati equation and asymptotic s
