## Abstract In this paper, we study the size effects of an H‐shaped defected ground structure (DGS) cell upon the characteristic impedance of a microstrip line, by using a simple circuit‐analysis method. An LC model of an equivalent circuit can represent the proposed H‐shaped DGS cell. It is found

✦ Synopsis
We have proposed a CPW-fed meander-type slot antenna, which has a nonuniform slot-line width. The resonant frequency of the antenna has been decreased from 2.50 to 1.94 GHz without changing the dimensions. By increasing the meander sections, the resonant frequency of conventional antennas has been decreased. However, in this study we have found that reducing the slot width without changing the overall antenna size can decrease the resonant frequency. With this approach, the size of the modified antenna is 87.7% to 92% smaller than that of a conventional rectangular microstrip patch antennas (1300 -2000 mm 2 ). Moreover, this antenna can be fabricated on single-layer substrate so that an easy and cost-effective manufacturing method can be designed. The disadvantage of this miniature antenna is its narrow bandwidth due to the small size. However, this shortcoming can be overcome by various bandwidth-enhancement techniques, such as using stacked substrate or tuning stubs.
