Wetlands, coastal and freshwater, are becoming recognized as uniquely important components of the global landscape. It has been estimated that 6°70 of the land surface of the world is wetland. These wetlands include bogs, marshes, fens, swamps, floodplains and other wet ecosystems that occur from the tropics to the tundra.
