โœฆ Synopsis

The roots of Sorokin's sociology are found in his Russian works. Barriers of language and politics however, have prohibited their study by many social scientists and historians. This article is the most systematic effort to compile, translate, and annotate the catalogue of Sorokin's scholarly writings from 1910 to 1922. The recent changes that made this bibliography possible have stimulated a resurgence of Russian respect and interest in Sorokin, and opened new opportunities for research and collaboration. These are explored in the closing section of the article.

This paper presents some of the little known and until now largely inaccessible Russian writings of Pitirim A. Sorokin. They date from a time when he was formulating many of the ideas that have come to symbolize his later sociology. They also reflect a period that not only disciplined his intellect, but shaped his character and spirit. Consequently, these essays and articles open to a wider community of intellectuals and scholars important resources and clues for understanding the works of one or sociology's most significant and controversial figures.

The bibliography identifies Sorokin's published work between 1910 and 1924, the last of his years in Russia. The essays begin when Sorokin was studying with the Komi-Zyryan philosopher and novelist K. F. Zhakof (K. F. Jakov in the West) in St. Petersburg.

From then to his exile on 23 September 1922 they reflect the breadth of his development as social scientist, philosopher, and political critic. The bibliography closes with articles published in Russia and Czechoslovakia during his first years as an CmigrC and with recent republications of his works from 1987-1992. Not included are many newspaper articles and Sorokin's unpublished works.'

The materials here are annotated only in part. Two criteria governed the selection of articles and books: the importance of their problems and ideas for understanding Sorokin's scholarship, and their availability. Unfortunately, many articles are not available either because they were published in rare periodicals not found even in the best libraries, or because they could not be located in other archives or state holdings. However, the materials reviewed here provide a necessary first step toward a broader understanding of a previously obscure stage in Sorokin's intellectual and personal history. They also reflect important cultural, scholarly, and political themes of the period. As such, they constitute a new resource for scholars in various disciplies and with diverse interest.

When is a "fringe science" not a fringe science? The answer may depend less on the longevity or even the pedigree of ideas than it does on the general popularity and the usefulness of those ideas to professional scientists. Many historians [e.g., W. F. Bynum and Roy Porter] have recently pointed to

Amazon.com Review Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King's *On Writing* really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists.
