✦ Synopsis

Van Andel and Perissoratis (2006) argue that the Late Quaternary palaeogeographic and sedimentation history of the Northern Euboean (Evvoikos) Gulf, Greece, is controlled by global fluctuations of the sea level, and ignore any significant role for tectonic and tectonovolcanic effects.

This approach is apparently based on the hypothesis that the rates of global sea-level fluctuations (with an average of about 6 mm/yr, roughly 120 m of sea-level rise in 20,000 yrs) and their amplitude are too high relative to other effects, which hence can be a priori ignored.

In recent years, however, there has been evidence of tectonic and volcanic movements with vertical rates, at least for certain periods, comparable or even higher than those of glacio-isostatic effects (Lajoie, 1986); for instance, this is the case in Southern Italy where N1300 m uplift in b1 my (Miyaychi et al., 1994) implies very high uplift rates during certain intervals, and in the Pacific coasts, where rates up to 15 mm/yr have been reported (Ota and Yamaguchi, 2004).
