By using a wide definition of consumer problems wilfried Nelles extends the scope of consumer research. His approach makes it possible to link consumer research to studies on action groups and popular movements. It thus ties consumer research to a large social-psychological theory of human behaviour, criticizing current limited economic theory of collective action. The perspective also makes consumer policy relevant in a wider social sphere. All institutions that offer products and services belong to the sphere Of consumer policy, also those producing subjectivity, e.g., influencing values and life-styles.
