✦ Synopsis
The paper by Mr. Mattson is a very interesting review of the state of membrane desalination technology, which is particularly useful for those of us who are not immediately involved with the membrane processes_ It is, however, somewhat disappointing that Mr. Mattson does not comment on the high dissolved solids contents cited with regard to the product water from reverse osmosis treatment of seawater. The Wrightsville Beach tests with RC-100 and PA-300 elements indicate product water rising to 800 and 1100 ppm TDS respectively, while the description given for the 3.2 mgd plant at Jedda allows up to 1000 ppm TDS maximum These values seem excessive when compared with those associated with distillation plants, and recognised health requirements for drinking water.
