β¦ Synopsis
The question of energy distribution often comes up when discussing PV. There are two sides to the market opportunity that it represents. On the one hand is replacing conventional power stations, and on the other is decentralizing power generation to the home or business. But few renewable energy sources can be considered ideal for either.
For example, where I live the alternative technology housing park once had a wind turbine to serve the estate. This proved impractical not long after its startup. Nothing to do with its power generating capacity, but more to do with its noisy blades. The turbine stood for many years as a folly to the good intentions where energy supply is concerned. An array of solar panels may have been a better neighbor and provided electricity despite variable weather.
The use of solar as a supplement to traditional electricity supply is a better bet. Less practical is complete replacement, unless the premises are remote from the national grid. But poor old PV has more contenders to deal with as each year goes by. This is a hurry up call for manufacturers and other agencies to make solar more competitive.
Workers around the world are investigating all sorts of energy sources -some seem reasonable, and some seem a little improbable. Take, for example, the problem of excessive animal waste from intensive farming. There are plans to solve or at least ameliorate this problem and at the same time generate electricity.
