โฆ Synopsis
This is the second of two issues in the International Journal of Chemical Kinetics commemorating the 90th birthday of Prof. Simon H. Bauer and emphasizing his contributions to chemical kinetics. It is interesting that the first citation in the contribution by Frenklach et al. is a reference to a paper by Bauer and Aten published almost 40 years ago on benzene pyrolysis [1]. Indeed, the building of large databases of thermodynamic and kinetic properties for the description of complex combustion phenomena that brings us to increasing understanding of real systems can be considered to be in the tradition set by Cowperthwaite and Bauer [2] on the properties of unsaturated organic molecules at high temperatures. The tools for constructing such databases have of course improved tremendously since the earlier days and the number of theoretical papers in the two issues is indicative of the important role that this area now plays in chemical kinetics. The development of experimental techniques has and continues to be an important aspect of chemical kinetics. It is therefore especially fitting to have in this issue contributions from two long-term collaborators of Prof.
