✦ Synopsis

THE FIELD OF adaptive control is an area where much more activity is performed by the research community than in industry. The main reason is probably that one of the major objectives of adaptive control has not yet been achieved: the design of controllers that could really be used in a black box fashion without knowing the technical details of the theory. But it is a current claim of the people active in the area of adaptive control, that the achievement of this objective now belongs to the near future. This certainly was the motivation of the editors when they prepared the present book. Indeed, I agree with the idea that there is a need for a book presenting at the same time * advances in the area * application examples.

Taking into account the above-mentioned motivations of the editors, I have selected the following criteria to evaluate how far this book attained its objectives: * the articles should be tightly coupled, to distinguish this book from simple conference proceedings; * to be accessible to a large class of engineers, and not only to specialists, the articles should start with basics, and finally give access to the recent developments of the theory, leaving out the technical details; * the book should present a collection of significant and motivated applications.
