✦ Synopsis

The propagation of combustion fronts in activated-carbon beds into gases containing 0.2-1.0 mole fraction of oxygen was studied at pressures of one to two atmospheres and at superficial gas velocities of 1-15 mm/s. At these low velocities, the experimental data and an interpretive model indicate that the propagationnonpropagation limit is about 0.3 atm oxygen. If a thermal energy loss mechanism is important, extinguishment of a reacting region will occur in pure oxygen for velocities less than about 5 mm/s.
