โฆ Synopsis
Evaluation o[ measurements o/ the liletimes o[ magnesium particles (50 to 120 micron diameter), burning in oxygen, air, 20~+8 A, and 202+8 He, strongly supports the conclusion that the overall reaction is governed by diffusion, predominantly o] oxygen atoms in thc first three gases but of oxygen molecules at the lower temperature in the helium mixture. The data are consistent with the cenosphere model, a porous oxide shell containing the ~'vaporating metal drop, the reaction zone extending to an approximately constant distance /rom the shell. Thermodynamic and thermochemical information on the magnesium-oxygen ,v.,tem substantiates the assumed flame structure i[ the reaction zone thickness is determined by the time requirement Jor nucleation and precipitation o[ magnesium oxide.
