✦ Synopsis

Excitation of K* (4%) has been studied as a function of collision energy by measuring K* fluorescence as a fast K beam (25 to 600 eV), oroduced by charge-exchange of an arceferated Kf beam, traverses a target gas. Results obtained for the rare gases and for H.,. OQ_ N,. and CI2 suggest that the qualitative form of the excitation cross sectinn is gsxverned primnril? by&e l&vest-lying vacant orbital in the target species.
