Abstract

This paper presents the optimization of antennas for the collision‐avoidance radar system of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Geometric parameters and radiation patterns are compared among horn, parabolic, cassegrain, and offset‐cassegrain antennas. Based on the sidelobe levels of the calculated radiation patterns and sizes, the parabolic antenna shows the best results: a sidelobe of less than −30 dB and gain of 37 dBi with a focal length of 21.3 cm and a diameter of 26 cm. This research is explored for the first time to the authors' knowledge and the should be useful in the UAV. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
