✦ Synopsis

We report a simple means of collecting aerosol particles using a columnar impactor packed with glass beads, followed by elution of the soluble material and chromatographic analysis. The procedure involves three steps: (1) Aerosol particles are brought into an environment supersaturated with moisture such that moisture condenses on the particles acting as condensation nuclei with the consequent growth of the particles in size. (2) Particles thus grown are aspirated through the packed column where they impact and are collected. (3) The impactor column is washed and the elutriated material is analyzed by an integrally coupled automated ion chromatography system that allows one to perform near-real-time measurements of the soluble fraction of the ionic composition of the aerosol.
