Abstract
Rehabilitation of disabled workers in the workplace requires a coβordinated effort between health professionals and the human resource function. Traditionally, rehabilitation has been conducted in settings outside the workplace and has perpetuated artificial divisions between all professions involved in supporting the human resources within the enterprise. More recently, two insights have emerged that will dictate effective workplace rehabilitation in the future. The first is that job retention of ill, injured, or otherwise disabled workers should be pursued proactively at the workplace rather than allow the employee to drop into the welfare net. Second, successful rehabilitation requires a high level of interdisciplinary effort that is not confined to any particular settings. This article notes some of the international impetus to achieve collaborations in rehabilitation and focuses on strategies for the collaboration between a βrehabilitationistβ and the workplace human resource function at three levels: policy, planning, and practice.
