✦ Synopsis

Microtextural description of carbonized material, especially metallurgical coke, has increased considerably in the last ten years. Nomenclatures used at various laboratories have arisen almost independently, with the result that similar terms are often being used for distinguishably different microtextures, and conversely, a variety of terms are often used for similar microtextures. In this study, the methods of specimen preparation, microscopic method, optical arrangement, point counting method and microtextural nomenclature have been collated and compared.

In this paper a unified description of classification methods in situations with multicollinear data is proposed. It is shown that a number of the well-established methods can be derived by substituting different modified versions of the covariance matrix into either the classical Bayes method or Fi
