✦ Synopsis

When packed beds are subjected to lateral oscillation, shear may occur within the bed leading to increased compaction and strength of the bed. This question becomes urgent when we consider consolidation and possible bridging of the material in aeroplane hoppers. We develop a relationship between lateral acceleration and the depth to which the bed is disrupted.
