Japan's surfactant output and sales contracted in 1H 2009

Japan produced 401,469 tonnes of surfactants in 1H 2009, down 25% from the year-ago level, according to the Japan Surfactant Industry Association. Both sales value and sales volume (minus captive consumption) fell 19% to Yen 86,826 ($924.9 M) and 339,696 tonnes, respectively. Recovery, however, seems to have begun as indicated by the slowing down of the rate of decline.
