The reaction of certain types of M~Ch~=I ~ limited to those having methylene groups, with a mixtme of dipl~yl disulfide and iJtenyl silane, under the influence of 10% of the cohalt ~ Co(eobe) 3, results in the fofmntl,m of hydro-sulfenylated products, such as (x-phenylthio carlxmyl compounds, in moderate to good yields. The process involves intermediates having radical character, judging by the 5-¢xo-tri8 cyc~i~0on product 21 observed in the reaction of ct,p-unseturated ester 20 having a suitable umalnmled side-chain.
