✦ Synopsis

In the face of increasing population in coastal areas and the resulting problems such as pollution, erosion, and depletion of fish stocks, wise coastal zone management is a necessity. Coastal Zone Canada '96 will address these issues, highlighting the importance of integrated coastal management and sustainable development. The conference is organized by the Groupe de Recherche en Environnement Cotier (GREC) and is to be held at the Universit6 du Qu6bec, Rimouski, Qu6bec, on 12-17 August 1996. The conference chair is Professor Mohammed E1-Sabh of the Universit6 du Qu6bec. The conference activities will include a review of developments in technology and information, and the conduct of a forum to gather representatives of interested parties such as academia, business, government and coastal communities. Recommendations will be framed to outline new directions in coastal management strategies in the move towards sustainable development and integrated management. Ideas and comments will be addressed in the forms of oral and written presentations, and opportunities will be provided for discussion through round-table and plenary panel sessions. Some of the specific subject areas to be addressed will include scientific tools used in various aspects of coastal management, environmental quality, climate change, socio-economic and legal issues, coastal community survival, and management and development of resources.
