โœฆ Synopsis

A number of places in Kent reported flooding on 21 August 2007. Towns and villages along the south coast of Kent received very heavy rainfall in the early hours with flooding reported in and around Dover, Hythe and Folkestone; lightning was reported to have struck a main signal box that was put out of order near Folkestone. Roads were reported closed in Dover and adjacent towns Hawkinge [A] and Alkham [B], with property flooded in Whitfield [C] (places mentioned in the text are shown in Figure 1). In addition there were news reports of trees blown down from gusty winds over the North Downs in the Challock area, south of Canterbury (Kent News, 2007). Later in the morning, intense rain also affected parts of the north coast of Kent, leading to flooding around Whitstable and Canterbury (BBC, 2007). Figure 7. Visible satellite picture (21/0600 UTC) showing the well developed convective system in the English Channel, and the line of showers that brought flooding to the north Kent coast during the morning.
