โฆ Synopsis
An equation for the frequency of coalescence of uniformly sized drops in a homogeneous isotropic turbulent-flow suspension of infinite extent is proposed. The equation is based on the assumption that most collisions between drops result in cohesion or coalescence, but for coalescence to occur, the relative velocity along the line of centres of two drops at the instant of collision must exceed a critical value. The equation was tentatively confirmed by comparison with the experimental data of MADDEN and DAMERELL for the coalescence frequency of water drops dispersed in toluene in an agitated tank.
