✦ Synopsis
The technique of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) has been employed to measure grain boundary segregants as a function of time in the temperature range of 7OB900 K. In situ AES measurements have allowed the kinetics of grain boundary interaction processes amongst trace and alloying elements to be investigated as a function of time and temperature without ambiguity. Segregation isotherms indicate a number of co-operative and site-competitive interaction processes amongst grain boundary segregants which occur in different kinetic regimes. These segregation isotherms are expected to provide experimental framework for complex alloys, to understand grain boundary segregation, its dependence on time, temperature and alloying effects. Additionally an attempt has been made to suitably utilise grain boundary segregation isotherms data to depict various interaction processes in a compact form in terms of interaction maps. Some experimental results in regard to the effect of rate of cooling on the kinetics of grain boundary segregation processes are also presented.
