✦ Synopsis

Rationale and objectives: The introduction of CT urography (CTU) in recent years has emerged as a powerful tool in the diagnosis of excretory renal system disease (1-3). A number of these patients with urinary obstruction will develop renal impairment with consequent contraindication for the use of iodinated contrast media. There have been no, to our knowledge, previous studies of the use of gadolinium in CTU. The objective of this work was to test the potential utility of gadolinium in CTU and to compare the attenuation values of CTU examinations performed with iodine and 0.5 and 1 M gadolinium chelates. Methods: We studied 15 patients divided into three groups of five. Group A consisted of five patients with normal renal function in which CTU examinations were performed after i.v. administration of 1 mL/kg of iopromide (Clarograf 300 mg I/ml, Juste
