Abstract
A novel frequency selective surface (FSS)/electromagnetic bandgap material (EBG) is presented, which operates as a spectral (frequency domain) and spatial/directional filter. The filter antenna filter (FAF) is shown to increase directivity of a compact EBG monopole antenna in simulation and measurement, resulting in a gain of 15 dB. The FAF can achieve a filtering response equivalent to multiple stacked λ/4 separated FSSs with a triple layer tightly coupled (0.16λ electrical length) surface. Its reflection phase properties exhibit those of an EBG material in its operating frequency making it possible to integrate closely to a radiating source and its reflector. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
