โฆ Synopsis
This study reports a prospective randomised control trial to assess the benefits of counselling for women receiving an abnormal smear result. 219 women were randomised to receive written information ยฑ counselling. Outcomes were assessed using the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory, The General Health Questionnaire and Profile of Mood States. High levels of distress were reported by both groups of women on all measures prior to the colposcopy examination. Both groups showed a highly significant reduction in scores post colposcopy. In spite of careful analysis the study failed to show any advantage of cognitive behavioural counselling.
