**reviewer:**david J. Dries, Md(university Of Minnesota Medical School)
**description:**this Is The First Edition Of A Multiauthored Textbook Of Adult Critical Care Medicine.
**purpose:**clinically Relevant Information Is Presented From The Perspective Of The International Critical Care Community.
**audience:**trainees And Practitioners Will Benefit From This Work, Which Includes Authors From 14 Countries.
**features:**after An Opening Discussion Of Inflammation And Cellular Biology, General Principles Of Critical Care With Particular Emphasis On Cardiopulmonary Techniques Are Presented. The Largest Part Of The Book Is Focused On Respiratory Disease, With Approximately One Quarter Of The Chapters Addressing Respiratory Topics. Excellent Presentations Cover Ventilator-associated Lung Injury, Heart/lung Interaction, And Modes Of Ventilation. Support Of Other Organ Systems Is Presented, But To A Lesser Degree. Concluding Chapters Describe Critical Care Considerations In The Postoperative, Obese And Injured Patient. Chapters Are Clearly Written And Are Divided Into Major Subheadings. An Outstanding Feature Of This Work Are The Illustrations Of Data, Line Drawings, Tables, And Photographs, Most Of Which Are Presented In Color. These Aids Significantly Enhance The Presentation. Chapters Conclude With A Short Reference List Usually Of Primary Work, But Sometimes Including Textbooks And Websites. The Table Of Contents Presents Chapter Authorship And Groups The 64 Chapters By Content While The Concluding Subject Index Of 25 Pages Includes Separate Entries For Figures And Tables.
**assessment:**this Book Takes A Unique Approach To Presentation Of This Discipline. The Authors Emphasize Tabular And Visual Data To Complement Text Presentation. For The Most Part, Visual Effects Are Good, Although Some Radiographs Reproduce With Poor Quality. Another Remarkable Change Is The Reduction In Reference Lists. I Would Prefer To See More Primary Papers Cited. Finally, Subjects Outside Cardiopulmonary Critical Care Receive Uneven Coverage. Nonetheless, I Enjoyed This Work And Will Use The Cd Containing The Ample Illustration Library That Accompanies The Book.
