✦ Synopsis

evident not only in their general approach, but also in the small detail. Some of the major sources of data are cited in quite different ways in different chaptersthus the Meteorological Office (Chapter 2) appears as London in Chapter 1, and Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut (1952) in Chapter 5 appears as Van Duijen Montijn (1952) in Chapter 6. Most chapters have a useful section on heat balanceperhaps there was a brief to all authors indicating that this should be included-but the units and notation are not standardized between the chapters: radiation comes in W m-* in Cha ter 1, kcal cm-* month-' in Chapter 2, and calcm-'day-' in Chapter 4, and sensible heat exchange between ocean and atmosphere is sometimes S, sometimes H and sometimes Q,.

The overall impression is that the individual chapters stand very much as separate entities and have only come together because of the need to include this 70 per cent of the Earth's surface in the World Survey of Climatology. I suspect that very few individuals will find that the markedly different approaches in this Volume will meet their own particular requirements, and that it will only be those libraries who are concerned to have the complete series who will purchase it.
