Abstract

The symmetry species of Raman modes of molecular units belonging to all important and frequently encountered symmetry point groups adbsorbed on metal surfaces are classified into A^I^, A^II^, A^III^, DIAI(μ), DIAII(μ), etc., and tabulated (DIA = distortion‐induced activity). An example of symmetry species classification of D~2h~ symmetry is discussed. In another example, the Raman spectra of the pyrazine molecule adsorbed on silver surfaces, viz. (111) and (110), are discussed in order to demonstrate the importance of the classification in the study of surface Raman spectroscopy. It is concluded that this molecule attains a polar type of distortion of C~1~ symmetry on these surfaces.
