β¦ Synopsis
The selectivity index, a recently introduced retention parameter related to Kovats retention index, is applied to the classification of gas chromatographic stationary phases. Selectivity indices are shown to be constant within a homologous series of compounds, linearly related to column temperature and dependent upon the molecular structure of stationary phases. The new retention parameter is shown to enable the classification of liquid phases without the need for an apolar reference phase. In common with the McReynolds and Rohrschneider schemes, phase comparison is simple but classification relies on a series of values characteristic of selected functional groups.
