✦ Synopsis

The earliest reports of diagnostic needle aspiration biopsy are often attributed to the British military surgeons , who identified trypanosomes in lymph nodes, and, less commonly, to Hirschfeld (1912), who identified a lymphoma of the skin.4 However, two German physicians, M. Kun of Strasbourg and Hermann Lebert of Berlin and Zurich, also reported, advocated, and described the diagnosis of malignant lesions using needle aspiration biopsy techniques in the mid-1 800's. This article describes their early work, and also highlights other achievements from their careers.
