✦ Synopsis

The material upon which the present paper is based comprises the following three collections from various parts of Manchoukuo, first, a number of plankton catches made by myself during a journey t o northern and southern districts from June to August, 1934; second, a rich collection made by Prof. T. Kawamura and Mr. M. Yamasaki in the southern plains, especially in Kantoshu (Kwantung Province), in Septembers, 1933 and 1935; and third, some plankton samples collected by Mr. Y. Nishimoto in the vicinity of No-ho north of Tsitsihar in 1934 and by Mr. K. Okugawa in the Ussuri district south of Chabarovsk during September and October, 1936.

Our knowledge of the Cladoceran fauna of Manchoukuo has been very unsatisfactory, only ten species having previously been known (cf. Rylov 1923, Ueno 1933). This number has now been raised to thirty six, in which seven families and twenty genera are represented. The following gives first a brief description of each species and then a concise discussion on the types of habitats in which the cladocerans are found. Finally, some remarks are added concerning the geographical affinities of the Cladoceran fauna of Manchoukuo in Eastern Asia.

My own collection was made while I was with the service for the prevention of blood-sucking insects connected with the Railway Construction Bureau of the South Manchurian Railway Co., and I acknowledge my indebtedness to the officials of the Bureau. My sincere thanks are also due to the gentlemen mentioned above for their kindness in placing their collections a t my disposal; and to Prof. T. Kawamura who kindly read the manuscript for this paper and gave much valuable advice.
