In the course of investigations aimed at synthetic routes for the preparation of terthienyls (1) bromine was added to trans dithenoylethene (I) in both acetic acid and chloroform as solvents. Two products were isolated in each case with melting points177-178° and 156-157O. Both compounds proved by elementary analysis and NMR spectra to be the bromine addition product (II).
