✦ Synopsis

The residual nuclei following a reaction are left in a polarized state in general. One way of measuring this polarization is to observe any y-rays the residual nucleus emits. Their angular distribution reveals the even moments of the polarization while their circular polarization depends upon the odd moments. Following a general discussion of circular polarization, and the predictions of the direct interaction picture of nuclear reactions, simple cases of stripping reactions and inelastic scattering are considered. Valuable information can be obtained concerning both the reaction mechanism and the reduced widths and nuclear spins involvec1.
