✦ Synopsis
The photooxidation process of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD) by maleic anhydride was studied by a time-resolved ESR method. The CIDEP spectra assigned to the anion radical of maleic anhydride revealed that the reaction takes place in the excited triplet state of TMPD. The analysis of the intensity ratio of the hyperfine lines leads to the conclusion that the S-T j mixing of the radical pair mechanism remarkably contributes to the total emissive spin polarization especially in the low concentration region of maleic anhydride. This S-T t mixing is probably enhanced by the Coulombic interaction in a radical-ion pair.
