โฆ Synopsis
Roskill environmental concerns have mixed effects on boron demand
Roskill's new report stresses that environmental issues, strong competition between suppliers, and customer needs continue to affect borate consumption for detergent applications. Detergent is the second largest market for borates with a share of 17%. Among the important developments include a shift from chlorine-based bleaches to perborate bleaches in North America, more stringent laws on boron levels in drinking water in EU by 2013, lower washing temperatures in Western Europe, and the availability of compact and liquid washing products in several regions. Global consumption of borates for detergents is pegged at around 240,000 tonnes/y, including 185,000 tonnes/y from Eastern Europe and 23,000 tonnes/y from the USA.
