✦ Synopsis
Even more than fifty years after the introduction of the antibiotics into the chemotherapy of infections diseases the problem of emerging resistance still seems to be unsolved. This volume provides a comprehensive view of the actual knowledges of bacterial resistances against the most commonly used antibacterials. Introductory articles by S. B. LEVY and J. E. DAVIES describe the origins and distribution of antibiotic resistance determinants. Another topic is the influence of antibiotic usage on the development of resistant microbial populations in hospitals (R. GAYNES, D. MONNET, H. GIA-MARELLON, A. ANTONIADON). The population dynamics of resistance development is treated by two other papers (F. BAQUERE et al., M. LIPSITCH and B. R. LEVIN). The impact of antibiotic usage in agroculture on resistance spreading (W. W m ) and the costs of antibiotic resistance for the society (R. E. LENSKI) eluminate other facets of this problem. Special emphasis is given to the evolution of B-lactamases (K. BUSH). Four contributions (R. A. SHURRAY, N. FIRTH, R. M. HALL, M. C. ROBERTS, M. C. COHEN) deal with the genetic reasons of resistance acquisition and spreading amongst bacterial populations and with the epidemiology of resistance as well. Due to the numerous "first-hand" informations the volume could be recommended to a broad range of scientific readers.
