✦ Synopsis
pigments and printing inks. The acquisition should be completed during 4Q 2005. Eckart reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation at €65 M on sales of €302 M in 2004. The global sales breakdown was: 30% to Germany, 27% to other European markets, 22% to North and Latin American markets; and 19% to Asian markets. Eckart has eight manufacturing sites and employs 1855 people worldwide. It is the leading global supplier of metallic pigments, ahead of Silberline, Toyal, Schlenk and Wolstenholme.
Altana Chemie reported sales at €854 M for full-year 2004, derived from three business units -Byk Chemie (additives and instruments); Coatings & Sealants; and Electrical Insulation. In recent years, Altana Chemie has typically contributed 25-30% of the total sales revenue of the Altana group. The other 70-75% is mainly derived from pharmaceuticals, including notably treatments for asthma and cancer.
Several financial analysts believe the acquisition of Eckart is a prelude to the demerger of Altana into two separate businesses, one specialising in pharmaceuticals, the other specialising in chemicals.
