These results indicate that the use of incubation for 1 to 3 hr underestimates plasma renin activity in a large fraction of ascitic cirrhotic patients (7). These findings may explain some of the surprising results on plasma renin activity reported by Gentile et al. This technological phenomenon should be taken into account in the design of future studies on the reninangiotensin system in cirrhotic patients with ascites.
