โœฆ Synopsis

This book is comprised of 13 chapters and discusses the extraction and fractionation of cholesterol and cholesteryl esters, diacyl-and triacylglycerols, glycerophosphatides, glycolipids, phosphoinositides, inositol phosphates, and glycerophosphatide-and arachidonic acid-derived biologically active mediators. The methods reported delineate improved procedures of analysis that make use of "state-of-the-art" instrumentation including high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), gas-liquid chromatography (GLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and HPLC-or GLCmass spectrometry (MS). Each chapter is written by an author or group of authors who have expertise in a selected area of lipid analysis.

In Chapter l, A. Kuksis and J.J. Myher review general strategies for the analysis of lipids, with consideration given to chemical structure, polarity, use of protective groups, and specialized derivatives. They also discuss improved procedures for extraction, prepurification, and instrumental analysis.

Chapter 2, by E. Geeraert, describes the use of polar capillary GLC in the analysis of intact, natural diacyl-and triacylglycerols obtained from a variety of sources, including various animal fats, milk and mutton fat, beef tallow, and peanut, rapeseed, and butter oil.

Chapter 3, by W.S. Powell, provides detailed methodologies for the separation and quantification of lipoxygenase products, i.e. prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes, by use of normal, argentation, and reversed-phase HPLC.

Interest in preparative Liquid Chromatography (Prep-LC) has increased considerably in the last years. This is reflected in the books written on the subject (M. Verzele and C. Dewaele in 1985, K. Hostettmann et a\. in 1986, and now 6. Bidlingmeyer et a/.
