A facile, inexpensive procedure is shown for the preparative separation of both quaternary ammonium and pyridinium compounds by flash column and thin layer chromatography using normal phase silica gel. The technique is based on normal phase ion-pair chromatography. The separation of a number of quaternary ammonium and pyridinium compounds is demonstrated. Subsequent removal of the ion-pair reagent from the purified compounds is achieved using flash column chromatography with inexpensive activated carbon (charcoal) serving as the stationary phase.
