## Abstract The α and β hydrogen exchange reactions catalyzed by pyridoxal have been applied to ten of the common amino acids to prepare α, β deuterated derivatives. The exchange and isolation procedure allows for numerous different samples to be processed in parallel. The deuteration at the α posi

✦ Synopsis
a&Trehalose (WD-glucopyranosyl /SD-glucopyranoside) was needed in order to co&m the identity of one of the reversion products of n-glucose catalyzed by glucoamylase, to determine the kinetics of its conversion into D-gh~0Se with glucoamylase, and to examine its separation from LX,* and /3,#Hrehalose, as well as from other disaccharides, by high-performance liquid chromatographylJ. Mother liquors from a Koenig+Knoa preparation of /&/Hrehalose octaaceta@P were available, and as these were known to contain c+-trehalose octaacctatej, it was decided to attempt the isolation of a,@trehalose from this source. The use of chromatographic procedures for the separation and analysis of the various trehalose forms facilitated the isolation of unequivocally pure +trehalose and the measurement of an accurate optical rotation and melting point for it.
