Fils d’un modeste tisserand génois, Christophe Colomb (1451-1506) suscite, aujourd’hui encore, autour de sa vie et de sa fameuse découverte des Amériques, bien des passions. Des zones d’ombres et de mystères jalonnent l’existence de cet être contradictoire, complexe, mais toujours fascinant. Favorisée par sa culture scientifique et religieuse, l’idée de mission ne cesse d’habiter le «très magnifique seigneur don Cristobal Colón, amiral de la mer Océane». Elle l’accompagne tout au long de ses quatre voyages, durant lesquels il nous parle d’Indiens, d’or, de tempêtes, de mutineries ; et se poursuit au-delà, à travers l’élaboration de son Livre des Prophéties, et la perspective quasi mystique de la conquête de la Terre sainte. Colomb a découvert le Nouveau Monde parce qu’il le cherchait. Le trouvant, il a fait voler en éclats les frontières géographiques et mentales d’une Europe encore médiévale, et changé l’histoire du monde.
