โฆ Synopsis
The medical and surgical care of small, premature infants has improved over the last decade; at present, most 1,OOO to 1,500 gm and many 600 to 1,OOO gm babies survive. Much of the focus of neonatology now is on improving survival, and nutrition is important for optimal outcome. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is used extensively to provide caloric and protein needs to these infants, especially those who have intestinal disease and chronic respiratory distress syndrome. Intrahepatic cholestasis occurring during TPN has surfaced as a major clinical problem and is second only to catheter complications as a reason for discontinuing therapy.
